Sometimes all it takes to brighten my day is a friendly head peeking over the other side of the fence to say “Hi”!
Since moving in last October, we have slowly been getting to know our neighbours. We can’t gather with our friends & family, so I have grown very fond of these impromptu conversations. As much as I enjoy human interactions these days, my favourite neighbour has four paws, one blue eye, one brown eye & lives just on the other side of the fence.
The Fence-Jumper
Upon moving in, it didn’t take long for us to realize there was another dog on the other side of our back fence. One morning “J” called for me. Our friend from the other side of the fence was in our yard playing with Lily. Quickly grabbing my coat & boots, I entered the yard, wondering how I would get Lily’s friend home. I chased both Lily & her new friend around our yard & then into another neighbour’s yard & then back into ours. I am sure the two of them thought this was some great fun. Then with no struggle, our new friend hopped back over the fence to their own yard.
Our Friend Artemis
A few weeks later we learned that the name of our fence-hopping friend was Artemis. Since her first visit in the winter, Artemis has popped in for numerous visits. She regularly will hop into our yard, run around with Lily for a few minutes, & then when she has had enough, will hop back home. Whenever I see Artemis’ head peek over the fence, I ask her if she wants Lily to come out to play. Seeing her cute face looking longingly over the fence never ceases to bring a smile to my face.
One day at the beginning of spring, Lily had a run-in with a couple of wasps and was up on the deck recovering. That morning, Artemis hopped over for a bit and wandered around the backyard looking up at Lily. We told her that sadly Lily wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t play, as much as she still wanted to.
Lily and Artemis have such a cute friendship and I love watching them excitedly greet each other. I also love watching them rip around the yard even if it means that sometimes the mulch goes flying and I lose my battle to grow grass. Their friendship and Artemis’s visits have brought so much joy to my day.
